John Christopher Callen replied to Joe Ciambruschini's discussion Some advice please?Regardless of style, or origin, an individuals martial way should become just that,... individual.
One should first find a sound foudational system they can learn effectively. After aquiring a base of knowledge, seek out new paths of learning and training so as not to limit your ability to protect yourself, your family, or even a stranger, if need should arise.
I have trained in a variety of martial "ways" since I was six years old. My father was my primary educator, having had extensive training in boxing, Jiu-Jutsu, Karate, as well as military H2H. It is with this background my martial foundation was formed.
In my personal experience I have incorporated techniques from various other systems. These I learned in direct tutilage from practitioners of Kempo Karate, Ai-Ki-Jitsu, Wing-Chun, as well as Nin-Jitsu, and basic freestyle wrestling. My current instructor is a Seventh Degree Senior Master in Songham Tae Kwon Do, and one of only TWO licensed Krav Maga school owners in the state of Nebraska. I am also training in the various techniques of the Gracie Combatives program.
I respect all styles as each has it's own unique tradition and history. It is up to each individual to decide which "way" they will go, and NO instructor should limit their students options or training, or speak ill of other styles regardless of their personal opinion. HOWEVER, if you have first-hand knowledge of ANY instructor whom you KNOW is not honorable, it is an obligation to steer students away from any persons who may jeopardise their training, and there-by, their safety.
